突然の暑さのせいというよりは、寝不足と朝方の冷え込みのせいなのだろうけど、午前中にまた寝てしまう。
図書館で向かいの席に座った人は、確かに起きているはずなのだけど、絶えず鼾のような息を轟かせている。時々それが止まるので、無呼吸症候群ではないかとハラハラする。立ち上がったときに覗いてみたら、太っているというよりは、大柄でラグビーかアメフトをやっていそうな感じの人だった。30分程度で用が済んだらしいので、助かった。
今日悩んだ文章。

多分「what pass for」を括弧に括ればいいんだろう。

「ニューズウィーク」の文章で「pass」が現在形（多分）になっているのは、それが現在も通用するというか、現在の視点から言われているからだろうし、３単現の形にならないのは「front lines」の影響を受けているからだろう。
しかし、ここで「what pass for」がどんなニュアンスを加えているのか、私にはよく分からない。
記事はこう続く。

今日読んだ「ル・モンド」の記事には、こんなことが書いてある。参考までに。

なお、「OTAN」は「Organisation du Traité de l’Atlantique Nord」の略で、つまり「NATO」のことである。フランス語では多くの場合、修飾語が後ろにつくので、英語の略語とはしばしば逆の並びになる。
