　タイプライターで打ったような活字が並んでいるが、翻訳では残念ながらそこまでは再現できない。
　たぶん直ぐに読み終るだろう。出来れば来月中にでも。

　英米文学やフランス文学は、私が原文で読めるごく少数の作品だけで我慢しなくてはならない。だが、それでよい。たどたどしい歩みであるとしても、翻訳で読むよりずっと楽しいのだ。

　It’s sandwich time for the poor.
　But they cannot cross the street until the signal is given. Then they all run across the street to the church and get their sandwiches taht are wrapped in newspaper. They go back to the park and unwrap the newspaper and see what their sandwiches are all about.
　A friend of mine unwrapped his sandwitch one afternoon and looked inside to find just a leaf of spinach. That was all.　(p.2)

　しかし、合図があるまで、道を渡ることは許されない。合図があると、誰もが教会めがけて走りだし、道を横切って、新聞紙にくるまれたサンドイッチを受けとる。そして公園に戻ってくると、新聞紙をひろげて、サンドイッチの内容を調べる。
　ある午後のこと、わたしの友人が包みをひろげて中を見ると、菠薐草（ほうれんそう）の葉がたった一枚。それだけだった。(p.13)
