今週はタイムとニューズウィークの両誌にビル・クリントンの文章が載っている。ヒラリーとの新婚旅行でハイチに行って以来、この国の民主主義のために力を尽くし、基金を設立したり、国連の特使になったりして、ハイチに関わり続けてきたのだそうだ。
同じ人の文章だから、難易の差はなさそうな気がする。だが、実際にはニューズウィークの方はかなりやさしく、タイムの方はじゃっかん凝った書き方になっている。前者は募金を呼びかけるものであり平明で感動的な文体がふさわしく、後者は国連ハイチ特使の立場で書くエッセーとして格式が求められる、といった目的の違いによるものなのだろうか。それとも雑誌の雰囲気を反映するものなのだろうか。
それほど違わない内容の二つの文章を並べてみる。

We have to relentlessly focus on trying to build a model that will be sustainable, so we don’t plant a bunch of trees and then revert to deforestation, or adopt a program to bring power to the country that can’t be sustained, or adopt an economic strategy that is going to wither away in two years.
