赤毛のアン 赤毛のアン・シリーズ 1 (新潮文庫)

▼久々に小説を読んでみようと思ったのだが、あまり時間がかかるようでは困るので、比較的易しいらしい『赤毛のアン』を選択した。
▼そんなに参照しなくても済みそうな気はするけど、一応村岡花子の訳を手元に置いておく。

▼冒頭の段落を丸ごと書き抜いてみる。

Mrs. Rachel Lynde lived just where the Avonlea main road dipped down into a little hollow, fringed with alders and ladies’ eardrops and traversed by a brook that had its source away back in the woods of the old Cuthbert place; it was reputed to be an intricate, headlong brook in its earlier course through those woods, with dark secrets of pool and cascade; but by the time it reached Lynde’s Hollow it was a quiet, well-conducted little stream, for not even a brook could run past Mrs. Rachel Lynde’s door without due regard for decency and decorum; it probably was conscious that Mrs. Rachel was sitting at her window, keeping a sharp eye on everything that passed, from brooks and children up, and that if she noticed anything odd or out of place she would never rest until she had ferreted out the whys and wherefores thereof. アヴォンリー街道をだらだらと下って行くと小さな窪地に出る。レイチェル・リンド夫人はここに住んでいた。まわりには、榛（はん）の木が茂り、釣浮草（レディーズ・イア・ドロップス）の花が咲き競い、すっと奥のほうのクスバート家の森から流れてくる小川がよこぎっていた。森の奥の上流のほうには思いがけない淵や、滝などがあって、かなりの急流だそうだが、リンド家の窪地に出るころには、流れの静かな小川となっていた。それというのも、レイチェル・リンド夫人の門口を通るときには、川の流れでさえも行儀作法に気をつけないわけにはいかないからである。リンド夫人が窓ぎわにすわり、小川からこどもにいたるまで通行のもの全部に鋭い監督の目を光らせていて、ちょっとでも腑におちない点やふつごうなところを見つけたが最後、その理由を根ほり葉ほり、さぐりださずにはおかないということを、川の流れのほうでもわきまえていたのかもしれない。(p.5)

▼細かいことを言えば難癖はつけられるが、まあ良い訳ではないだろうか。しかし、こういうユーモアはやっぱり原文で読むに限る。
▼「keep a sharp eye on ～」という表現。何も見えぬ風にしていながら、片目だけぎろりと光らせているかのような印象を与えるが、eyeが単数になっているのはそういうことではなくて、眼の働きを問題にしているかららしい。これで熟語になっている。
